1 Thessalonians 5:12-28

Final Instructions and Benediction

12 We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the
Lord and admonish you,
13 and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. 14 And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the
fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.
15 See that no one repays anyone evil
for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone.
 16 Rejoice always,
17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophecies, 21 but test everything; hold fast what is good. 22 Abstain from every form of evil.23 Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and
body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

24 He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.

25 Brothers, pray for us.

26 Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss.

27 I put you under oath before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers.

28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

1 Thessalonians 5:12-28 (esv)

The most common biblical parallel verse for 1 Thessalonians 5:12-28 is
Ephesians 5:20:

“Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

This verse echoes the sentiment expressed in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, emphasizing the importance of gratitude in the Christian life. Both passages encourage believers to maintain an attitude of thanksgiving regardless of circumstances. This practice fosters a positive outlook, strengthens faith, and acknowledges God's sovereignty. Cultivating gratitude helps Christians focus on God's blessings rather than life's challenges, promoting spiritual growth and resilience. By giving thanks "always" and "in all circumstances," believers demonstrate trust in God's plan and recognize His goodness even in difficult times.

What is the significance of acknowledging
those who work hard in
1 Thessalonians 5:12-28

(1) The passage emphasizes the importance of acknowledging and respecting spiritual leaders in the church. The significance of this includes:

a. Recognizing spiritual authority: Paul urges believers to "acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you" (v. 12).

b. This recognizes the God-given authority and responsibility of church leaders.

c. Promoting unity and peace: By respecting leaders, the church can "live in peace with each other" (v. 13). This fosters a harmonious community.

d. Facilitating effective ministry: When leaders are respected, they can more effectively carry out their duties of teaching, guiding, and caring for the congregation.

e. Encouraging leaders: Acknowledging leaders' hard work provides encouragement and support for their often challenging role.

f. Modeling Christian virtues: Respecting leaders demonstrates Christian virtues like humility, love, and submission to authority.

g. Supporting church order: Recognizing leadership helps maintain proper order and structure within the church body.

h. Reflecting Christ's example: Jesus himself modeled respect for authority, and believers are called to follow His example.

i. Facilitating spiritual growth: When believers submit to godly leadership, it creates an environment conducive to spiritual growth and maturity.

By emphasizing the importance of acknowledging and respecting church leaders, Paul is ultimately promoting a healthy, unified, and spiritually thriving church community.

:: Prayer ::

Heavenly Father,
We come before You with grateful hearts, acknowledging Your goodness in all circumstances. Help us to respect and honor those who lead us spiritually, working tirelessly for Your kingdom. Grant us the strength to encourage the disheartened, support the weak, and show patience to all.

May Your joy fill our hearts, and may we pray without ceasing. Guide us to discern Your will, holding fast to what is good and rejecting every form of evil. Lord, sanctify us completely, and keep our whole spirit, soul, and body blameless until Christ's return.

We trust in Your faithfulness, knowing You will accomplish this work in us. May Your grace be with us always.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
