For before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself from the Gentiles because he was afraid of those who belonged to the circumcision group..." ::  General Commentary  :: This passage highlights a confrontation between Paul and Peter (Cephas) over the issue of Jewish customs versus the freedom found in Christ. Paul rebukes Peter for his inconsistency, pointing out the danger of reverting to the old law. Peter’s behavior suggested that Gentile believers needed to follow Jewish law to be fully accepted, which contradicted the truth of the gospel. Paul reminds Peter and the Galatian church that justification comes through faith in Christ alone, not through adherence to the law...
