Psalm 91

Psalm 91 (CSB)

The Protection of the Most High

The one who lives under the protection of the Most High dwells in the shadow of the Almighty.

1 The one who lives under the protection of the Most High

dwells in the shadow of the Almighty.

2 I will say concerning the Lord, who is my refuge and my fortress,

my God in whom I trust:

3 He himself will rescue you from the bird trap,

from the destructive plague.

4 He will cover you with his feathers;

you will take refuge under his wings.

His faithfulness will be a protective shield.

5 You will not fear the terror of the night,

the arrow that flies by day,

6 the plague that stalks in darkness,

or the pestilence that ravages at noon.

7 Though a thousand fall at your side

and ten thousand at your right hand,

the pestilence will not reach you.

8 You will only see it with your eyes

and witness the punishment of the wicked.

9 Because you have made the Lord—my refuge,

the Most High—your dwelling place,

10 no harm will come to you;

no plague will come near your tent.

11 For he will give his angels orders concerning you,

to protect you in all your ways.

12 They will support you with their hands

so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.

13 You will tread on the lion and the cobra;

you will trample the young lion and the serpent.

14 Because he has his heart set on me,

I will deliver him;

I will protect him because he knows my name.

15 When he calls out to me, I will answer him;

I will be with him in trouble.

I will rescue him and give him honor.

16 I will satisfy him with a long life

and show him my salvation.

Ask questions of your own at the end of this post.

    Once upon a time, in a small village nestled in the hills, there lived a wise biblical commentator named Eli. Eli was known throughout the land for his deep understanding of the scriptures and his ability to glean profound insights from even the most challenging passages. One day, a young traveler approached Eli seeking wisdom and guidance, and Eli welcomed him into his humble abode.

    The young traveler, eager to learn, asked Eli about the significance of Psalm 91. Eli smiled gently and began to recount a parable to illustrate the essence of the psalm. He told the story of a shepherd who tended to his flock in the lush green pastures of the countryside. The shepherd, a devout believer in God's protection, recited Psalm 91 daily as a prayer for guidance and safety.

    One fateful night, as a fierce storm raged across the land, a pack of wolves descended upon the shepherd's flock, seeking to devour his precious sheep. In the midst of the chaos and danger, the shepherd remained calm and resolute, trusting in the words of Psalm 91. As the wolves closed in, a sudden hush fell over the scene, and the shepherd beheld a miraculous sight - a brilliant light shining forth from the heavens, driving away the wolves and enveloping the shepherd and his flock in a protective embrace.

    The young traveler listened in awe as Eli concluded the parable, explaining that just as the shepherd found refuge in the shadow of the Almighty, so too can we find shelter and peace in God's unfailing love and protection. The lesson of Psalm 91, Eli explained, is not just a story of physical deliverance, but a profound reminder of God's abiding presence and care in all circumstances.

    As the young traveler departed from Eli's home, his heart filled with gratitude and awe for the timeless wisdom of Psalm 91. He carried with him the deep truth that those who dwell in the secret place of the Most High shall truly abide under the shadow of the Almighty, finding strength and solace in the everlasting love of God.
